Trip Ojika - Nagasaki

Hi everyone,

Today’s travel advice: how to include Ojika in your travel itinerary if you are travelling to Nagasaki, Saga
or Fukuoka prefectures.
The ideal is to stay 3-4 days to walk around the island, relax, discover the different beaches, visit the
museum, the temples and the printing workshop and go to Nozaki island, which is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.

For my part, I visited the city of Nagasaki from Ojika 2 days a 1 night. I took the ferry from 7am to arrive in Sasebo at 10am. Then I took the bus from Sasebo Station to Nagasaki Station and I arrived around 12:00. You should go to the tourist information point to pick up a card and buy a tram day pass (500 yen). The tram makes you possible to get to almost every tourist spot in the city like Dejima, Chinatown and the Atomic Bomb Museum.

In the evening, if you want to go to a traditional bar, Bar MORIYAMA is one of the best bars in the city. Its owner is very welcoming and served one of the best saké (Nagasaki saké) that I had in Japan.

From Fukuoka, you can also take the boat (about 5h) and arrive very early in the morning in Ojika. This can be ideal during the Rugby World Cup end of September 2019, if you want to visit Fukuoka and its surroundings with a change of scenery and be away from the crowd.

Information Ojika - Nagasaki prices
Bus price : 1500 yens one way
Ferry price : around 2900 yens one way

Information prix Ojika - Nagasaki

Typhoon Season

Hi everyone,
As you already know, Japan is hit almost every year by typhoons. The most affected areas are southern Japan, including the island of Kyushu with sometimes Ojika. The season of typhoons extends from July to September, which can cause many damages, such as last year when powerful typhoons, Jebi for example, where many people lost their lives.
If you are travelling to Ojika during a typhoon, I should follow the instructions of the Japanese authorities. If you are staying at the Shimayado Goen Hostel, the owner will keep you informed (for example for ferries) and explain the procedures to follow.

To follow the advance of a typhoon, here is the official Japanese website (en english) : Japan Meteorological Agency https://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/

From my experience this summer in Ojika during a typhoon, there was heavy rain, a few gusts of wind and mudslides on the roads; the best thing to do and stay at home or your hotel, listen to the news and wait for it to pass. Perhaps buy some food and water before the typhoon hits, so your fridge won’t be empty.
