Sunset Display

Ojika island is home to a rich variety of wildlife. As soon as you disembark the ferry softly purring cats will greet you, but as you explore deeper there are more unusual sights to behold.

Yesterday at sunset I was aimlessly exploring by bicycle and came cross a tranquil spot next to the main harbour where fishermen stood chatting with their rods dipping into the ocean. Suddenly, I realised that there was a mass of birds soaring over the water, searching for their dinner. Not just the common seagull, but at least twenty black kites (tobi” トビ) and a few storks too.

I quietly laid down my bicycle to take in the impressive display of these majestic hunters. The kites gracefully hover above the sea, identify their prey and then rapidly dive bomb with missile precision to clasp fish between their claws. I wondered who would eat better that evening, bird or fisherman.
