'Off the beaten track' is a popular clich
é. Travel agencies often claim to hold a destination's secrets: offering authentic cultural experiences, uncrowded sightseeing and unspoilt landscapes. Sometimes, this is nothing more than a cunning marketing ploy. Places labelled as supposedly "authentic" will host cheeky souvenir stands and ques of camera-wielding tourists. However, Ojika Island is a genuinely unspoilt haven for those that love nature.
The beaches, cliff tops, forests and hills offer an adrenaline rush for your inner adventurer. Paths may not be immediately obvious, and your route will probably not be plotted on Google maps. Instead, you must use your intuition, an old fashioned paper map and enjoy the exploration of untamed terrain.
Many of the sights will be deserted and a little overgrown. This only adds to the wild beauty of a place not built to be tourist-friendly, but suit the needs of the people that live in harmony with their environment.
