Fishing competition

After attending the matsuri in Ojika, I had the opportunity to participate in a fishing competition. Each
year at the end of August, the Ojika Tourist Information Centre organizes a fishing competition which
brings together the inhabitants of the neighbouring islands with those of Ojika.

This competition takes place at the main port of the island and the meeting place is at 5 pm in the harbour

lobby. Each participant draws lots his location and then the tourist office explains the rules and distributes
the bait.

At 6pm the competition starts and each team has 2h to catch the most fish. Children as parents participate and the first fish are caught. Except for my team… Unfortunately, our location wasn’t ideal, it took us more than 30 minutes to catch our first fish. After an hour, the fish finally appeared and our cool box began to fill.

After a few lessons given by two fishermen from our team, it’s my turn to try to catch my first fish and it’s not easy. But with perseverance and especially thanks to their instructions, I finally managed to catch 1! Then, 2, 3.

The event is coming to an end and each team is weighing its catch. Our team has fished 3.58 kilos, not so bad for a bad location and for beginners! Then comes the moment to reveal the names of the 5 winners and unfortunately we arrive at the 6th place. But the tourist office thought about everything and organized a lottery for everyone to leave with a small gift!

If you want to have a unique experience and learn how to fish, I recommend this event. To participate, all you have to do is sign up with the tourist office: an English-speaking person is present.

Bonjour à tous, 

Après avoir assisté au matsuri d’Ojika, j’ai eu la chance de participer à une compétition de pêche. Fin août,
l’office de tourisme d’Ojika organise chaque année une compétition de pêche qui réunit les habitants des îles
voisines avec ceux d’Ojika. 

Cette compétition a lieu au port principal de l’île et le point de rendez-vous est à 17h dans le hall du port.

Chaque participant tire au sort son emplacement puis l’office de tourisme explique les règles et distribue les
appâts. 

À 18h la compétition commence et chaque équipe a 2h pour pêcher le plus de poissons. Enfants comme

parents participent et les premiers poissons sont pêchés. Sauf pour notre équipe... Malheureusement, notre
emplacement n’étant pas idéal, il nous a fallu plus de 30min pour avoir notre premier poisson. Passé 1h, les
poissons sont enfin apparus et notre glacière a commencé à se remplir. 

Après quelques cours donnés par deux pêcheurs de notre équipe, c’est à mon tour d’essayer de pêcher mon

premier poisson et ce n’est pas facile. Mais avec persévérance et surtout grâce à leurs instructions, j’ai enfin
réussi à en pêcher 1 ! Puis, 2, 3. 

L'évènement touche à sa fin et chaque équipe fait peser ses prises. Notre équipe avons péché 3.58 kilos, pas

si mal pour un mauvais emplacement et pour des débutants! Vient ensuite le moment de dévoiler le nom des
5 gagnants et malheureusement nous arrivons à la 6ème place. Mais l’office de tourisme a pensé à tout et a
organisé une loterie pour que tout le monde reparte avec un petit cadeau !

Pour y participer, il vous suffit de vous inscrire auprès de l’office de tourisme: une personne parlant
anglais est présente.
